A Deeper Cold
A quick glance at the calendar tells me that autumn is still present but, the temperature tells me that winter will soon be upon us. Wind and snow will soon turn the landscape barren and foreboding but, cold can be felt in many ways.
Digital sensors, and film, need light to make an exposure. However, one dramatic element to light is its temperature. The type of light dictates the color, or temperature, of light. Shadowed areas often have varying blue tones that create a sense of coldness to a scene. Sunlit areas are often filled with warm light that is rich in magentas and other warm tones. The temperature, or white balance, of light changes the scene as well as the impact of your image.
Mood plays an important role in our lives and our images. We can influence the message and mood of our images simply by changing the temperature. Use your emotions and create something dramatic that you feel. Bash Bish Falls, to me, had a cold, lonely feel to it once I zoomed in on the bottom of the falls. I made it so.
