Description

Eye Contact

I appreciate all wild animals but, for me, some are a bit more exciting to see than others. Seeing a wild animal in its natural environment and observing their behavior is thrilling to say the least. Getting to photograph them is an even greater thrill. Last week the stare of a beautiful owl reminded me of how, and why, I became a photographer.

In 1996 my photography barely existed despite having owned a nice camera for 10 years. Until then I was plodding along taking documentary snapshots of my life and travels just for fun. However, that winter there was a Great Grey Owl that took up residence in Rowley, Massachusetts and a photo by acclaimed Boston Globe photographer Mark Wilson changed my photography, and me, forever. Today, I can still see Mark’s breathtaking photo in my head. The owl was in flight, low to the snow covered ground with wings beautifully extended and his head turned slightly toward Mark’s lens. The lighting and exposure was perfect. The shutter speed was fast enough to freeze the owl’s flight. The composition was spot on. The setting was natural and proper. The image captured the grace, power, and majesty of that beautiful bird. That image launched my photographic intent on a more meaningful path.

Everyone needs a muse. In order to create we must find motivation. Knowledge comes from learning and experience but, production comes from being inspired. Find your muse and let your creativity and intent flow.
